Tom Cruise by BikerScout Tom Cruise by BikerScout
Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier from Steven Spielberg's 'War of the Worlds'

This is the result of 5½-6 hours of work in Photoshop CS using a Wacom. It was intended to be an experiment using subtle colour variations and achieving a dramatic lighting style.

I'm chuffed with the depth of focus which was purely so that the main focus would be the sharply detailed facial features whilst everything else blends into the background. The chin & jaw are especially pleasing to me since I often struggle with this area (sounds silly, I know).

Ended up having a lot of fun with this piece. For a more detailed look at how the piece developed, take a look at the WIPs found here --> [link]

Edit 26-01-07:
I've shifted the reflection in his left eye so the pupils are more evenly lit and smoothed out some of the detail that I must have forgotten to finish. Oopsie.

Absolutely stunning! I really like it a lot! I once thought that Tom Cruise is not a very good actor but after seeing his performances in ''Jerry Maguire'' and ''Magnolia'' I totally changed my mind!

Really stunning work. :wow:
You'd never know you struggle with chin areas in portraits since the attention to detail in this one especially the "scruff" is just gorgeous. It almost makes me like Tom Cruise... almost. ;)
The focal point is especially good and is one area that I really struggle at (I always want to paint every little detail) but despite the lack of closeup small details in his jacket (that I would have shoved in) it is still very obvious that it's a leather jacket.
The texture above and below his eyes is just breath taking and as for the wet hair... :faint:
Truly wonderful work.

Thanks for such a detailed reply! :w00t:

This one is getting old now but every time I see it, I'm pleased with some of the details, especially the depth of focus which was my main goal. And there's absolutly nothing wrong with adding as much detail as you can. Knowing when to stop is the hardest part! :faint:

This has character, I really like the focus as well. I prefer this to some of your more photo real images. Which are outstanding, don't get me wrong.

I really appreciate your honesty - thank you! And I know exactly what you mean. This has more painterly textures and is a little uneven round the edges in places which is where the character comes from.

I think this explains why I haven't worked on anything new recently - to be honest I'm getting a bit bored of the realism thing and really want to explore other directions - fantasy characters in particular.

Sadly, I just don't have the time these days!

A shame you don't have time right now. You've nailed realisim in my humble opinion and I'd love to see what you'd pull off if you went into some looser fantasy painting! I'll be watching to see if you do get time :)

Thanks very much. :aww: I think this was the first portrait where using something as simple as depth of field added a whole new effect to the work.

Glad you like it. :thanks:
