I've left the Layers palette in again, as I did in the Self Portrait WIP, just to show my routine for separating stuff. It works for me.
This is about 3½ hours in. I'm still torn. Part of me likes it, but a larger part doesn't. I think I'm missing my vector outlines.
As before, the sketch lines and colour palettes (one for the hair, one for the face) are temporary - having them on their own layers is a great help, easily turn off and onable...
So yeah, it's progressing, but I'm probably going to reinstate the outlines like I've used on previous pieces.
Cheers for looking.
Edit: lowered the opacity of the sketch lines since they were blocking out most of the detail. Also added some vector outline detail.

That's entirely up to you really and how well you think you can judge. I often pick what I think looks right by eye and use that, but selecting directly from a source image can be useful too. It's whatever works for you.
I guess if you're trying to recreate it 100% accurately, pick from the source using the eyedropper tool, but I'm all for a bit of artistic flair.
I think you should try completing it without your vector outlines. You have a great start here. I think going out on a limb sometimes, however hard it may be, can be a great learning tool. Or if you choose to keep the outlines, Ill still enjoy it. Keep up the good work man.
The hair you see here is only temporary. I had to search through a few tutorials to work out how to get the effect I'm after for the hair. It's coming along pretty well, and should be posted soon, along with the walkthrough.tutorial for this piece.

I may start sampling from the image and then move to using my eye, once I get a better grasp on color.
My concept of color theory is lacking, at best. XD
Thanks for the input, it's very much appreciated.
