This is my current Photoshop workspace for the Bono piece.

Layout is pretty standard - I generally work with the ref photo on the left - painting on the right.

Edit: The skin I'm using is called Tronnix.

:bulletred: Couple of handy tips:

~ Why are there two views of the same file? - By creating a second window for the painting (Window > Arrange > New Window for "filename") you no longer need to zoom in & out of your piece to view the overall progress.

As you paint on the original, the copy updates too. A very cool feature.

~ Match Zoom & Location - If you tend to work with a similar layout to me, using the Window > Arrange > Match Zoom & Location could be a lifesaver.

This feature does exactly what is says on the tin. With your work document active, choose the option from the menu and your reference image (provided the dimensions of the document are similar/the same) will zoom in to the same area as you are currently painting and at the same magnification. Genius.

looks very good so far.
Do u draw the outlines of the portrait over the ref pic or separately?

Thanks very much. :)

Yeah, I tend to work very closely with the reference in the initial stages, using the results of the sketch stage as a general guide for laying down the flats, although more recently I've been trying to get away from this technique and work completely independently.

It's all about finding a comfort zone. I'm not in a hurry to venture outside of that zone yet - this is just a hobby after all. :aww:

You can see the various stages in the WIP combo --> [link]

I'm kinda uncomfortable drawing over the ref, it feels like cheating to me ^_^ But then again i always end up with portraits that don't look at all like the ref pic ;) So i;m trying to ease my consciousness so next time i'll try this method.
Uhh i love to see various stages of a drawing! :D Love the details u do!

You know, I spent so long (15 years or so) working with pencil and not gridding or tracing or using any kind of 'cheat' that I feel I owe myself a break.

I don't see it as cheating. The sketch stage takes 10 minutes. The rest of the piece... the actual painting... the details... the real work... the observational stuff... getting colours balanced right... lighting... can take up to 10 hours or more. You can't trace colours.

I've spent years working with traditional media getting likenesses right. Now that I'm working digitally, I'm concentrating on developing other elements. Once I'm comfortable working with digital media, then I'll combine the two practices.

If that initial 10 minutes helps make it a little bit easier and takes away the stress of getting the likeness, it works for me. :aww:

U convinced me :D
I tried it out. I didn't waste that much time for the base sketch. The outlines are much more look alike, and the progress takes 30% less time.
Hmm maybe i should use this method more often :)
Thanks helping me silence my consciousness :D ;)

So, is that option available in all versions of photoshop or just CS, or even possibly an addition with the skin (probbaly not tho)? I am confused here, but it is a nice feature.

I'm not sure if it's a feature of Photoshop pre-CS. I used version 7 for a couple of years, but didn't know the feature existed so it may or may not have been included.

Unfortunately, the skin just makes the whole thing look pretty and doesn't add any extra features. Be nice if it did though!

Ah, well I will take a snoop around PS7 and see if I can't find the feature. Skins are nice! I downloaded that windowsblinds thing once, but never installed it. Looks like it works pretty good, so I may just install it. Windows is bland at times.

dang did you do all that by freehanded by scratch? Thats amazingly awesome. I loved that girl with the shades before this one though. There are some people who trace over the photographs with the paintbrushes, but I don't think you do that.

I need that 2nd monitor so bad! :faint:

The skin is a Windowblinds creation called Tronnix.

There are very few skins that I actually get on with. There's always something minor that I don't like. :shakefist:
