My first complete pencil portrait of 2007!

I used to love Danny DeVito when I was a kid. He's a such a peculiar looking guy, but has done some great, iconic work.

As a kid growing up in the 80s, DeVito was a familiar figure most memorably for me as the unscrupulous Ralph in Romancing the Stone & Jewel of the Nile, plus as Arnold Schwarzeneggers brother in Twins and alongside Billy Crystal in Throw Momma From the Train.

His performance as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin in Batman Returns needs no introduction.

Those of you who've been watching me for a while will know I generally don't do any blending or smoothing in my pencil work. I like to leave the texture in there - it adds character and had become something of a signature style. For this piece, I tried smoothing, but also preserved a bit of my usual look at the same time.

Working time: approx 8 hours

Really, if there was an 11th Commandment, that should be it.

I'm still on the fence as far as the torts are concerned. I think this might have been the wrong choice of portrait to try using them on - DeVito's skin isn't that smooth...

Not using fingers to blend was definitely a good move though.

Cheers for the :+fav: :aww:

UNBELIEVABLE!!! Your pencil work is without a doubt some of the best I've ever seen. Nice!

If you choke a smurf, does he turn blue??

Yeah... I find blending works much better on women or younger people in general. I do love blending, though, and then meticulously working in tiny details with a .05 mechanical :D

P.S. Check out my journal if you haven't already, I'm working on a Spidey/Batman piece, thought you might be interested.

It is always noteworthy when an accomplished artist is willing to try new methods or ideas. I love that you can retain the ol' BikerScout style and introduce blending like this.
I think it works well and you have certainly captured personality in this drawing.
Bravo Sir!
