This is the first completed character from my 24 poster project.
James Morrison as CTU head honcho Bill Buchanan.

As a departure from my straight portrait work, I'm trying to emulate a more painterly approach. Strong colours, several characters & subtle traditional media details.

This is a new process for me - sketching in red, then simplifying in solid black, adding tone and then finally some colour. It's a wonderful method and if you've never tried it, I highly recommend it. :nod: I hear all the cool kids do it already... ;)

"Is this the same James Morrison, who used to play 'T.C.' McQueen in 'Space: Above and Beyond'? God, he grew old ;_;

He's still hot, though <3."

lol i think so too so far but im sure once u add the whole texture and touch ups it will be good aswell maybe post both b/w and color? :D
* why does deviantart not have a delete post func......* anyways... i just realize how uhm stupid that sounded but ok i guess i just realize realism wasn't probably ure goal in this work... coz all ure other works are just wow... and this is more like a painting.. which i thot stilll is amazing abt the post above.. i was thinking its a wip and ure aiming for realism obviously i need to read more @_@
Amazing work!
Do you colorize the gray, or do you add color from scratch "on top of it"?

(-very very small nitpick: is his left eye really that dark, or is it my crappy 100 dollar screen? )
When the whole thing is done, I'll post a b&w version + the colour version. :nod:

lol Nitpicking is good... I've just made it available for 'Download' so that you can see the full-size version. It's pretty dark, but nothing is finalised yet.

The colouring took very little time, doing the tonal work is the hard part - simply add a layer above the grey, set the Layer Mode to Colour (the default is Normal) and just start painting colour!

It can be pretty rough too. A bit of tweaking here and there and it looks pretty good. I love this technique because I much prefer working in b&w. :D

I'm writing all this down, thanks!!
You can probably really decide what to do with light/shadow and so on when you've got them all together and are done shifting around and added the lighting effects (I'm assuming you know the
Mystical Lighthing plugin?)
I really like the ink splotches too!
4 hours?! I thought it was impressive already, let alone in 4 hours!
